Re: Church of Sweden to stop referring to God as 'he' or 'Lord'

Reconstructionist Jews have neutralized the gender language for God, I.e. “Adonai” has become “monarch” or something, or maybe that’s “melech” ...

Jesus ... that would present unique problems.

I have a feeling you may have a view on the connections between Chinese Buddhism and HPB-phase theosophy. Were there any, either implicit or explicit?

The devil on my shoulder says (I think it got this from a TV show): “They’ll like us when we win!” The devil on my other shoulder says: “These characters have been trying to kill each other for four and a half thousand years. Do you, honestly, deep down, truly give a shit? Go eat some ice cream, imm...

It’s a pain

If you’re a Mahayana practitioner, posting on ... ahem, certain other forums ... you can’t post Pali suttas. Well I mean you could ... but to get someone to listen to you you’d have to get through pages upon pages of polemics and knee jerk reactions. Why? I.e. Why, historically, is this. And, why, i...

Would someone like to comment further on Ch’an. Are there any Esoteric-style visualization methods? I am primarily practicing Mahamudra at the moment in the context of TB.

Dear Reader, If thou wilt use these Words aright, and art in good Earnest, thou shalt certainly find the Benefit thereof. But I desire thou mayest be warned, if thou art not in Earnest, not to meddle with the dear Names of God, in and by which the most High Holiness is invoked, moved, and powerfull...

You will say, then, to me, “Do you, who see God, explain to me the appearance of God.” Hear, O man. The appearance of God is ineffable and indescribable, and cannot be seen by eyes of flesh. For in glory He is incomprehensible, in greatness unfathomable, in height inconceivable, in power incomparab...

Re: CNN Reza Aslan's depiction of Hinduism

Don't worry. There are many people out there who have wisdom and will not be deceived from watching this kind of thing. The answer as always is just to practice and have faith in our practice. @No_Mind. There are many people in the west who have a wiser and more compassionate view than depicted in t...

Re: Becoming a Buddhist

I took refuge at a Kagyu monastery. I remember being quite excited and pleased about it. As I was doing some prostrations with everyone else, however, I looked over and I saw one of the monks looking at me with this extremely sad smile, like he pitied me. I think I was a little p-ed off about it. I ...

Re: Post-enlightenment religion is impossible

Depends on what you mean by "truly religious". It does strike me these days that there is increased polarisation, with secular humanism and liberal interpretations of X religion on one side and fundamentally conservative interpretations of X religion at the other end. Considering that religions are...

Failed pacifism

But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. Matthew 5:39 This and similar passages are generally interpreted to mandate non-violence and pacifism for Christians. Since few Christians are, or have ever been, actually non...

Re: Flavors

Ecumenism is a tricky thing.

Ice cream is probably ok. I imagine pistachio would go quite nicely with strawberry.

Soup is the problem.

If we dump everything into one big pot - it probably won't taste very good.

Post-enlightenment religion is impossible

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from...

I like this word because it reminds me of ice cream.

Can we really understand the different "Dharmas" as supports, to give us different aspects of what we need in difficult times?

Or do we need to pay more attention to dogmatic interpretations?

Re: Violence in the New Testament?

For me the hardest passages are those which appear to describe an eternal hell. I'm aware of the arguments that "Gehenna" was really a garbage dump outside of the city of Jerusalem, and that the proper translation of "aeon" is "of an age", not "of everlasting duration". Sometimes it pains me however...
