Re: World's first vegetarian city

Even though my diet is now pretty much Vegan, it not good for governments to impose dietary laws. The 25% of Muslim meat eaters and the Hindus who sell fish etc are now just going to the black market, I suspect. Admirable view if you take the analogously laissez-faire position on drugs (incl. heroi...

Re: Simulation hypothesis

in Christianity it is God who created the universe, created man and the earth is very real, not some simulation. To say Jesus Christ is a "simulation" would be a blasphemy to mainstream Christianity, for example, similar with Islam, etc. I'm quite sure Muslims and Christians would say it's heresy. ...

Re: Simulation hypothesis

They simply aren't aware of each other but all of them where realized in shakyamuni's original enlightenment and are thus connected from the point of his enlightenment past, present and future. Sounds impossible but dependent origin in this world would be a catalyst to any new models of consciousne...

Re: Simulation hypothesis

I think this could be compatible with some Mahayana and some other older, early schools of buddhism. I believe there were some called "mind only" and believed there was nothing real, all is just illusion. This simulation hypothesis could be an extension or evolved form of those older buddhist tradi...

Simulation hypothesis

Supposing that some civilization, over all time (including the past and future), created an exact simulation of their world with high enough fidelity that its conscious minds were also simulated: 1. The inner simulation would create its own simulation (and recursively ever more nested ones) because ...

Re: Religious nones are the new #1

On the other hand, could a society of religious nones be amoral? For now. They are piggybacking on the Judeo-Christian (or Confucian or Buddhist in China) morals that already existed as the foundation of the societies they live in. If you ask them, they will repeat morals that are exact or near ide...

Good post.

The point of Buddhism is to escape the world, not make it a """better place""".

Atheists: If it doesn't make sense to me, I don't believe it

I don't have any faith in anything. Religion just doesn't make sense. God? I don't see any gods. My sensory perception of reality is infallible. My reasoning abilities are perfect. There's no way something can be true but impossible for me to personally understand it. That's why I'm an Atheist™. htt...

Re: Buddhism and gender equality are incompatible ideologies

What???!!!

You mean the political sensibilities that happen to be popular in the era that I happen to be born in AREN'T absolute law???

Shame on you! The Buddha (blessed be the arahant) would definitely be a Bernie supporter if he were here today.

Re: Fibonacci sequence

There are other more impressive examples of nature following observable mathematical patterns. Or what about the unobservable patterns—the behavior of stars, black holes, or small molecules in a test tube can be computed exactly. Proves nothing about [g, G]od. The existence of rules in nature doesn'...

The Promise of Reward

Once Olds and Milner had discovered the “pleasure” center of their rat’s brain, they set to work demonstrating just how euphoric stimulating this area of the brain was. First they starved the rat for twenty-four hours, then placed him in the middle of a short tunnel with food at both ends. Normally,...

Re: This guy says he saw an image of the Buddha while on DMT

Is DMT the same thing as Ayahuasca? Or is it that Ayahuasca contains DMT? Ayahuasca has DMT in it and is ingested by drinking it instead of smoking it. Otherwise it's the same thing. Interesting, I see that Joe Rogan is an agnostic, raised Catholic but now appears to have some interest in Dharma du...

This guy says he saw an image of the Buddha while on DMT

Go to 7:35

Many other people say the same thing, that they saw a sitting full lotus Buddha while on DMT.

Is this really a coincidence?
