The Cult of Reason was a natural progression from the start of The Enlightenment, where people were able to openly question Christian doctrine and this led to other more progressive thinking including Deism and others. Eventually it lost its hold and the people reverted back to mainstream Christian doctrines.

I notice you posted this in Secular Buddhism section; perhaps secular Buddhism is in some ways a continuation of the Cult of Reason and The Enlightenment. I'm not a big fan of secular Buddhism, but it is probably one of the best avenues for Dharma propagation in the 21st century.
