In man, the universe as a vast cosmic organism
becomes self-conscious and aware of itself.
Our human consciousness is nature's cosmic
consciousness, individualized in us. Our human
intelligence is nature's cosmic intelligence,
expressing and manifesting itself through us
as through its brains and minds. Our minds
are not our minds only; they are in a real and
deeper sense the minds of the Cosmos, and as
such, they must be in essential unity with it.

A soul truly and wisely great regards the right to which
the nature of man aspires as consisting in deeds,
not in fame; it chooses to be chief rather than
to seem so. On the other hand, he who depends
on the waywardness of the undiscerning multitude
does not deserve to be reckoned among great men.

What is curious about 20C dictatorships is that with their powerful
means of repression they fear the slightest murmur of dissent. A careless
word, a mistimed joke is enough to suggest heresy. This remains true under
present-day "political correctness," but so far the penalties have been mild—
opprobrium, loss of employment, and virtual exclusion from the profession.
Any form of persecution implies an amazing belief in the power of ideas,
indeed of mere words casually spoken.
J. Barzun

Temperance was the next topic of Pythagoras' discourses. Since the desires are most flourishing during youth,
this is the time when control must be effective. While temperance alone is universal in its application to all
ages, boy, virgin, woman, or the aged, yet this special virtue is particularly applicable to youth. Moreover,
this virtue alone applied universally to all goods, those of body and soul, preserving both the health, and
studiousness.

As a burnished mirror, so ought man to have his soul pure. When there is rust on the mirror, it is not possible that a man's face be seen in the mirror, so also when there is sin in a man, such a man cannot behold God.

The visions of Eternity, by reason of narrowèd perceptions,
Are become weak Visions of Time and Space, fix’d into furrows of Death;
Till deep dissimulation is the only defence an honest man has left.

We live in a hyper-partisan age where people no longer really pay attention to the substance of what’s said but as to who says it and what side they’re on and what it’s political ramifications are.

There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments, and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance — that principle is contempt prior to investigation.

The conservative is concerned, first of all, for the regeneration of spirit and
character -- with the perennial problem of the inner order of the soul, the restoration of the ethical
understanding and the religious sanction upon which any life worth living is founded. This is
conservatism at its highest; but it cannot be accomplished as a deliberate program of social reform,
"political Christianity." Recovery of moral understanding cannot be merely a means to social restoration: it
must be its own end, though it will produce social consequences.

Enter the Path! There is no grief like Hate
No pains like passions, no deceit like sense
Enter the Path! far hath he gone whose foot
Treads down one fond offence.

Enter the Path! There spring the healing streams
Quenching all thirst! there bloom th’ immortal flowers
Carpeting all the way with joy! there throng
Swiftest and sweetest hours!

Harmony is the inlet of God [Brahman] into the mind, so that the mind acts in obedience to a law above mind — and that law is unity. Unity is the Nature of God, and harmony is its expression in mind and in the works of mind.

Each from the other tries to separate.
One clings to earth, attracted by desire,
The other rises upward.

The heart will commonly govern the head; and any strong passion, set the wrong way, will soon infatuate even the wisest of men; therefore the first part of wisdom is to watch the affections.

A bit from Russell Kirk on revolution - from his biography, Edmund Burke: A Genius Reconsidered.
He attacked the fallacy of the “Rights of Man,” expounded by the French theorists, because he recognized in this abstract notion of rights an insensate desire to be emancipated from all duties. Unlike the “Glorious Revolution” of 1688, the French Revolution was intended to uproot the delicate growth that is human society; if not impeded, this revolutionary passion would end by subjecting all men first to anarchy and then to a ruthless master. In the pursuit of pretended abstract rights, men would have lost all real prescriptive rights.

Burke, with his prophetic gifts, perceived the shape of things to come in this bent world of ours. His passionate refutation of leveling ideology and totalist politics has lost nothing of its force with the passing of two centuries. What he said of the Jacobins is yet more true of the Marxist ideologues of our century.
