THE UNIVERSAL PRAYER

O Adorable Lord of Mercy and Love!

Salutations and prostrations unto Thee.
Thou art Satchidananda.
Thou art Omnipresent, Omnipotent and Omniscient.
Thou art the Indweller of all beings.

Grant us an understanding heart,
Equal vision, balanced mind.
Faith, devotion and wisdom.
Grant us inner spiritual strength
To resist temptations and to control the mind.
Free us from egoism, lust, greed, hatred, anger and jealousy.
Fill our hearts with divine virtues.

Let us behold Thee in all these names and forms.
Let us serve Thee in all these names and forms.
Let us ever remember Thee.
Let us ever sing Thy glories.
Let Thy Name be ever on our lips.
Let us abide in Thee for ever and ever.

Shared be your prayer;
Shared be your end;
Shared be your purpose;
Shared be your deliberation.
Shared be your desires;
Unified be your hearts;
United be your intentions;
Perfect be the union amongst you.

Om
From unreality lead me to Reality,
From darkness lead me to Light.
From death lead me to Immortality.
Brihadaranyak-opanishad, I, 3, 28
Om
All that is invisible is verily Infinite Brahman.
All that is visible is also Infinite Brahman,
The whole universe has come out of Infinite Brahman.
Brahman is Infinite although the whole universe has come out of It.

Om Peace, Peace, Peace.

Om.
May there be peace in heaven.
May there be peace in sky.
May there be peace in earth.
May there be peace in water.
May there be peace in vegetation.
May there be peace in trees.
May there be peace in devas.
May there be peace in Brahmā.
May there be peace in all.

May that peace, real peace, be mine.
Rig Veda X, 121

“The seeker after Truth,” says Manu, “reaches the highest goal by Japa only”. And “Japa,” declares the Mahabharata, “is said to be the best of all spiritual practices.” The Vishnu Purana supports this view whole-heartedly when it observes, “That which one obtained through meditation in the Satya Yuga (the Golden Age), through sacrifice in the Treta Yuga (Silver Age), and through worship in the Dvapara Yuga (Brazen Age), may be achieved in the Kali Yuga (Iron Age) by reciting the names of the Lord.” And this recitation of the divine names, or Japa, implies also dwelling on the divine attributes.

11. To Thee, O dispeller of gloom, we offer salutations with our mind, and approach Thee daily, by day and by night.
12. Be of easy approach to us, even as a father to his son. Do Thou, O self-effulgent Lord, abide with us and bring blessings to us.
13. The Lord who watches over the universe and fully understands the truth behind all things,—may He protect us all.
14. Let us meditate on the excellent glory of that divine Being who illumines everything. May He guide our understanding.
Rig Veda
15. O Thou glorious Lord, O protector of vows, I am determined to master my lower self. Vouchsafe unto me the required strength and make my effort fruitful. Through Thy grace, leaving untruth, may I realise Truth.
Sukla Yajur Veda Samhita
